MDD wall, a sustainable separation.
Exploring
This project was in a collaboration with The Loop Factory, a company that focuses on circular economy and sustainability. One of the materials that The Loop Factory develops is Recycled Textile, which is made by used clothes and other textile products that doesn't have a purpose. The task of this project is to give the material a purpose as in form of a new life.
In order to make this Recycled Textile become a good product, I need to know what the properties of the material are. That I’ll know by exploring and examining the material, which I did. As this is a Material Driven Design process, there is no right or wrong, it’s all about the feelings and what the material wants to become. Within my research, I came to the conclusion that this material is sound-absorbing and does not allow light through.
With the two main properties of the material in mind, I started sketching a room with things that could be made of the Recycled textile. As am drawing I realized that I found it, a curtain, that doesn't allow light through and is sound-absorbing. Perfect! I continued sketching on how they will look, slowly but surely the curtain became a wall that could be used in other places than just windows, it could be used as a partition wall.
Concept
I thought that I should do a concept model to show at the presentation. When I tested the material earlier I came across biovax. With some spay-paint and biovax on the material then in a hot press, the material becomes leather-like, which is very fascinating. I used that on the bottom of my wall. To create the concept model I cut, grind, pressed, painted, drilled, glued, and used the oven to heat up the material. The size of the model was 1:5, which is about 30 cm in height and 15 cm in width.
Result
The partition wall can be used for separation of a room, like in big offices when you need to have a conference or in kindergarten when half of the children need to sleep, the possibilities are endless. Due to the fact that they are hanging, you can easily clean under without the need of moving something. They hang on a track which makes them even more customizable to the users needs. And best of all, they’re sustainable and don’t harm nature.
